Opportunity preparation

Turn preparation into forward movement.

Preparation works much better when it's aimed at one direction. Pick a target first, then build the materials that make the case for it.

What preparation covers

Seven pieces most searches need

Not all at once. Each one is more useful when the direction is already chosen.

  • 01

    Resume organisation

Structure your history around the direction you are targeting, so a reader sees relevance rather than chronology.

  • 02

    Portfolio planning

Decide what you need to show, and build the two or three pieces that actually demonstrate it.

  • 03

    Project documentation

Write up what you built, what you chose not to do, and what you would change. The write-up is often what gets read.

  • 04

    Interview practice

Prepare the handful of stories that cover most questions, and practise saying them out loud.

  • 05

    Application tracking

Keep a record of where you applied, what you sent and what you learned — so the next one is better.

  • 06

    Networking preparation

Work out what you are actually asking for before you ask. Specific requests get answered.

  • 07

    Skills-gap planning

Compare where you are against where you want to go, then sequence the gap into something achievable.
