Making the case
Finance and Business Analysis
Sit between a business problem and the people who will build or fund the answer.
Career overview
Business analysis is the work of turning a vague organisational want into something specific enough to act on: what the problem actually is, who it affects, what a solution must do, and how anyone will know it worked.
Financial analysis shares the method and applies it to money — forecasting, budgeting, modelling the effect of a decision before it is made. Both reward people who ask the uncomfortable clarifying question early.
Typical responsibilities
What the work looks like
- Interviewing stakeholders who each describe a different problem
- Mapping how a process currently works, including the parts nobody documented
- Writing requirements that a delivery team can build against
- Building models that test what happens under different assumptions
- Facilitating a decision between options with real trade-offs
- Tracking whether the change delivered what was promised
